About Prince Edward Island WG
The Prince Edward Island Sustainability Network (PEISN) is the newly established Education for Sustainable Development Working Group for the province of Prince Edward Island. The working group was established through cooperation of the PEI Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, the PEI Department of Environment, Energy and Forestry and the PEI Model Forest Network Partnership Ltd. and in partnership with Learning for a Sustainable Future, Environment Canada and Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth.
The group is in the early stages of development and is currently focusing its efforts on raising the profile of ESD and the PEISN to decision makers, having representation at ESD Canada and Council of Ministers of Education, Canada (CMEC) meetings, distributing a press release about ESD and the PEISN to inform citizens about sustainable development and building its membership base.
Vision
The PEI Sustainability Network (PEISN) envisions all Islanders integrating the principles, values and practices of sustainable development into their everyday activities to create a more sustainable future in terms of environmental integrity, economic viability and a just society for present and future generations.
Goal
- To foster and promote education in PEI that leads to the development of civically engaged citizens that will advocate for peace, social justice and healthy ecological systems now and in the future.
- To create leadership and support for the identification and implementation of sustainability education initiatives across the province.
- To equip educators with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to include sustainability in their teaching.
- Promote “Learning by doing.
- To facilitate communication and cooperation amongst PEISN participants, and amongst PEISN participants and the general public.
- To create a mechanism for those involved in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) to improve the effectiveness of their efforts through stronger linkages to curriculum.
Objectives
- Provide leadership in the coordination and delivery of ESD activities on PEI.
- Determine the status of ESD activities in the formal, non-formal and informal education sectors in PEI then identify the gaps, opportunities and priorities for future ESD activities.
- Establish strategic collaborations between governments, business, education sector leaders and community groups to work together to advance ESD on a province-wide scale.
- Develop action plans, training and support for leaders in the implementation of sustainability education policy, curriculum and learning resources in formal, non-formal and informal education across the province of PEI.
- Identify ESD tools and materials and make them more accessible.
- Develop a plan to evaluate overall success of ESD activities in PEI during the UN Decade.
- Monitor and report on the progress of ESD in PEI.
- Support and build connections on ESD locally, nationally and globally.
